Obituary

Thomas J. Seifert Sr. of New Milford was 98 years old when he peacefully passed away at home on  Sunday, August 27, 2023. Thomas was born in the Bronx in 1925 to Lillian and Herbert Seifert. He was one of six children, a loving brother to Morgan, Herbert, Joseph, Lillian and Sister Roseanna. As a graduate of Evander Childs High School, he went on to enlist in the United States Navy at the age of 17. During World War II, Thomas served on the Destroyer USS Moffett DD362. After being honorably discharged in 1946, Thomas returned home to marry La Vonne Schuldt. The couple would settle in New Milford in 1954 where they raised three children and formed lifelong relationships with many families in the neighborhood where he lived for the next 70 years. Thomas worked for the New York Bell Telephone Company as an installer, retiring in 1983 as a Repair Supervisor. He was the former leader of the New York Catholic Communication Guild and Retreat Club. He had also served as the President of the Communication Local Union, Bronx, NY. He was a founding parishioner of the Church of the Ascension, New Milford, a Life Member of the New Milford-Teaneck Elks (Elk of the Year 1990),the River Edge VFW and the Tin Can Sailors.


Thomas lived his life as a loving, dedicated husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and great great grandfather who spent his 40 years of retirement gardening, fishing, and chasing after his grandchildren on the Jersey Shore. He was an exceptional bodysurfer, even after hip replacement surgery at the age of eighty. He enjoyed socializing at the Elks watching the Giants and being the best worst Yankee Fan. He was devout Kennedy Democrat and a generous man giving to all those in need.  He enjoyed endless summers creating memories in Seaside Park with all of his family. A legacy that he will leave behind.


He is predeceased by his wifeLa Vonne, his siblings, and his sons Thomas Jr. and Paul. Thomas is survived by his daughter Patricia, daughters in law Rosemary and Andrea, grandchildren Lori and Nat Mufson, Donna Mahan, Michelle Gabriel, Paul and Daniela Seifert, Travis Meyer, Dylan Meyer, Eric and Brittney Seifert, Brian and Jen Seifert as well as his nephew and best friend Ed Seifert. He is the great grandfather of Pamela, Stephany, Max, Jack,Jake, Alexa, Benjamin, Julienne, Gabriella, Nico, Justin, Brandon, Izzy, Brendan, Valentina, Natasha, and Chase and a great great grandson Brooks.He was blessed to have many more grandchildren through the Messino family that he loved dearly. Whether you knew him as Tom, Dad, Grandpa, or Poppy, your life was better because he was in it.


A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in his memory on Saturday, September 2nd at 10 am in the Church of the Ascension, New Milford. Burial will follow at George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus.
