Monserrate "Monsi" Valentin

Monserrate Valentin passed away on Sunday, December 6, 2020 at the age of 81 after a month-long struggle with pneumonia complicated by contracting the Coronavirus while under treatment.  She was loved dearly by her husband of 60 years, her three children, four grandchildren, siblings, in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends. 

Monserrate (Monsi) was born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico (USA) to Pedro and Teresa Valentin and was the eldest of 5 children.  As a young girl and the eldest she helped raise and care for her family while her parents worked.  

At the age of 18, Monsi and her family relocated to the Bronx, NYC where she worked in downtown NYC.  It was during her daily commute to work, on the Lexington Avenue line, that she met her husband, Jose Burgos.  They married in the summer of 1960 and had three beautiful children, Mary, Lisette and Jose Luis.

While Monsi was a woman of few words she often expressed her immense love and joy through her amazing cooking which she shared generously with her family and friends.  Everyone who has had a taste of her delicious meals would anxiously await her main course dishes during family and holiday gatherings. 

Monserrate was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister.  Throughout her latter years her health became fragile and despite all her struggles one thing remained absolutely certain, the profound love she shared with her grandchildren (Kathryn, Julian, Peyton and Ethan), children and her husband.  This love was her motivation throughout these years and gave her the strength she needed every single day.

Family and friends are invited attend the viewing hours from 5pm to 8pm this Thursday, December 10th.  A prayer service will take place at 7pm. 

The family will be hosting and broadcasting virtually for those who wish to attend but cannot due to the pandemic.  Information will be shared on this funeral home's website on Thursday and a link will be provided for the live stream.
