John Paul Varner passed away Sunday, January 30th, at the age of 77. Born in Miami, Florida, on April 7, 1944, John was a resident of New Milford since 1951. He was an accomplished musician and after graduating from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1966 where he met his beloved wife Marie, he went on to teach classical guitar at Fairleigh Dickinson and Kean University for many years. In 1967 he performed on the classical guitar at Carnegie Recital Hall. Over the years, he taught countless students to play guitar at Fairleigh, Kean, and in his home. Many of these students became his close friends for many years. In the early 1980's he changed careers and began working in the computer programming field. He would go on to work for various companies, later retiring from the IT department at Holy Name Medical Center in 2007.
John was predeceased by his loving wife of 48 years Marie in 2016. He is survived by his loving son Daniel Varner and his wife Tara and loving daughter Amy Varner. John is the devoted brother of Robert Varner and the cherished grandfather of Hailey, Jacob, and Gavin. He leaves behind many devoted nieces and nephews, He also leaves behind his beloved dog Daisy. He was affectionately referred to as his grandchildren's "Ace" and "Poppy," and his nephews' "Foothead." He was invested in a number of causes, mainly protecting the environment.
