Gerard Harty Obituary

Gerard A. Harty of New Milford, NJ passed away on Monday, April 13, 2020 at the mature age of 85. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend.

He is survived by his loving wife Kathleen; his two children: Michael and his wife Georgeann and Thomas and his wife Patricia; his seven grandchildren: Hellen, Travis, Victoria, Thomas, Alexandra, Colin and Ian; his nephew Robert Cash and his wife Helen, his niece Diane Rasmussen; his grandniece Kathleen and his grandnephews Christian, Richard, and Daniel. He is predeceased by his sister Marilyn (nee Harty) Cash.

Gerard was born in Brooklyn, New York to Kathleen (nee McLaughlin) and Thomas F. Harty on July 28, 1934. After high school, Gerard joined the United States Marines, an honor he would carry proudly throughout his life. Following his service in the military, he began working for The New York Times, a career that spanned 40 years.

A long time parishioner of the Church of the Ascension in New Milford, Gerard served as an usher and Eucharistic minister. He enjoyed rooting for his favorite sports teams - the New York Yankees and Notre Dame - and schooling his grandchildren in pool.

Gerard passed away peacefully at home after a year long battle with cancer. And while he will be greatly missed by his family and friends, we know that he is now in a more better place

A memorial service is tentatively scheduled for July 2020.
