Dorothy Alice Gerbino passed away peacefully Friday, April 17th. Born and raised in Jersey City, she lived most of her life in North Bergen before settling in Little Ferry. The last of the 5 children of Patrick and Dorothy Cullen, Dorothy was the proprietor of Basic Embroidery in North Bergen for many years. She was predeceased by her late husband Louis in 1981. Dorothy is survived by her loving daughters Louan Robin Johns and her husband George and Gayle Gerbino. She was predeceased by her sisters Margaret and Patricia and her brothers Joseph and Patrick. Dorothy was the devoted grandmother of Louis and Matthew Johns. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. She will be laid to rest with her late husband Louis Gerbino in Flower Hill Cemetery, North Bergen.
Dorothy was known affectionately, to her family and friends as Dolly, Dotty, and Dot.
She was the fourth of five children and knew what it was like to be poor and go to bed hungry at night. Never bitter though, because she referred to those days as, “The Best in My Life.”
She worked in the Embroidery Industry for over 60 years. For many of those years, she worked alongside her beloved husband Louis, and her cherished sister Patsy at Basic Embroidery in North Bergen.
Her greatest loves were her grandsons. From the moment they were born, she devoted her life to them. Driving them to St Joseph’s School in the mornings, playing ball on the front lawn, and never missing a Birthday, Holiday, or school event. She loved life and always had her coat and shoes close to the front door, ready to go in an instant when we needed her.
Her battle with Alzheimer’s began over 10 years ago. She carried this cross with courage and grace. Mom never gave up and knew each one of us to end through the eyes of a Mother’s Heart.
Please know that she passed away very peacefully through the Divine Mercy of God. Fragile and Beautiful. We know that she is at peace and envision that she has been greeted by siblings, friends, and Hubbie Louie with great joy. We can hear them singing a chorus of “Hello, Dolly, This is Louis Dolly, It’s so Nice To Have You Back Where You Belong........”
We miss you so Dear Mother. We Love you forever, you have taught us well. We will remember you always. We “Thank you, Thank God for You, The Wind Beneath Our Wings.”
