Delroy Constantine “Roy” Verley, born November 9, 1946 passed away on December 18, 2020 at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, New York. His private battle with a serious illness showed his determination to continue his earthly journey. He fought hard in the final week of his life but was finally called home to be with his Heavenly Father.
Delroy was born in Kingston, Jamaica. He attended St. Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) where he found a passion for playing soccer. He would sneak off at every opportunity to play soccer until a teammate warned him that his dad was coming and looking for him. He would then leave the games abruptly and race home to do his homework and work alongside his dad as a wood worker/ furniture maker. It was in his father’s shop that he discovered he was skillful with his hands building and repairing furniture etc.
Roy graduated from high school in 1965 and went on to work at the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation as an Architect drawing building plans for houses and other structures. He immigrated to the United States from Jamaica in 1971 and worked for the city of New York inspecting buildings and bridges before going into business for himself as a building contractor. Roy loved to work; he loved the long hours working hard from sunrise to late at night. There was always something else that needed to be finished before he would head home.
When Roy was not working, he was talking sports or politics, especially with family members. You knew he was getting started when he would say “let me tell you something.” This was usually followed by another hour of discussion on the topic at hand. He will truly be missed by all.
Roy is survived by his spouse Joyce Verley; his sons Philip, Karl, Derrick (Chris), Richard and Daniel; grandchildren Candace, Glenn, Neil, Kurt, Karl J, Trey, Elara and Bryson; siblings Vansittart, Valerie, Owen, Eddie, Vilma, Ward, Michael, Dadre, Easton, Upton, and Otis. He is preceded in death by his father Clarence Verley, mother Blanch Pearson, stepmother Pearl Verley, and brother Noel Verley.
Roy, it is okay to take a break now, you are Home with your Father in Heaven. Rest in peace!
