Manuel Manrique, age 98, passed away peacefully on May 10, 2018 at 10:30am in Westwood, New Jersey. He was born on February 27, 1920 in Manzanilla, Cuba. Manuel married, Maria del Carmen Fernandez, on July 29, 1949. Maria preceded his death in February 2016. Manuel had a great sense of humor and loved his family fiercely.
Manuel Manrique served in the United States Army from 5 Dec 1942 to 1 Nov 1945 with the rank of Private First Class (PFC). He served as an electrician with Company C of the 237th Engineer Combat Battalion. PFC Manuel Manrique served valiantly in combat during World War II where he fought in the Battle of Normandy, and The Battle of the Bulge. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Bronze Arrowhead.
Manuel is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Peter Villahoz; his daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Edward Hastie; his granddaughter, Peggy and her fiancé, Mark Gaffny; his grandson, Peter Villahoz and his wife Jamie; his granddaughter, Jennifer and her husband Eric Diaz, and his two grandchildren, Stephen and Lora Hastie. In addition, he leaves behind great-grandchildren, Hayley, Kameron, Benjamin and baby boy, Sebastián arriving in July.
A wake will be held at Boulevard Funeral Home and Cremation Service, New Milford, NJ on Monday, May 14, 2018 from 2:00pm-4:00pm and 7:00-9:00pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at 9:30am at Ascension Church in New Milford, NJ. Burial to follow at St. Raymond’s Cemetery in the Bronx.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, an organization that his wife, Maria was passionate about.
