Sylvia Andra Hemphill Douthit was 77 years old passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family at home in Dumont, New Jersey Monday, August 23, 2021.

Witty, resilient, strong and family focused are all words that describe Sylvia, a devoted sister, mother and aunt. Sylvia was born in Winston-Salem, NC on September 12, 1943, the second of two daughters born to Eleanor Lyerly Hemphill and Alfred J. Hemphill. She inherited a rich legacy of faith, family, and ambition.

Sylvia attended the public schools of Winston-Salem, NC and graduated from Atkins High School in 1960. In 1961 she married Linville Douthit and they had one daughter, Sylvia Lynn Douthit.

Sylvia was a licensed beautician and a highly skilled nurse. She spent many years as a nurse at Bergen Pines in Paramus, New Jersey. In 1992 she and her family relocated to Florida where she was a nurse for many years and also worked with the Seminole County Sherriff’s Department.

In 2006, she retired and moved back to North Carolina where she spent some amazing years with her daughter, Sylvia Lynn and her niece, Cheryl. In 2011, she moved back to New Jersey and lived a joyous life with her sister, nieces and nephews.

Anyone that knew Sylvia knew how much she loved life and enjoyed every minute of her journey.
Sylvia will always be her family’s sunflower. Sunflowers symbolize happiness, optimism, honesty, longevity, peace, admiration, and devotion…our Sylvia.
